With National FFA convention just finishing up, I think it’s fitting that I explain how FFA has played a large role in my life. I joined FFA as a Freshman at Stewardson-Strasburg. I participated in creed speaking and won at the Section level. I also participated in dairy judging.
Some of the biggest accomplishments of mine are from FFA. First, I was a member of the winning state dairy judging team in 2012, we finished in the gold division at Nationals. I went through what seemed like a million interviews to win the title of Dairy Production Proficiency winner. This one is my favorite award, after putting hours and hours into your record book winning with it feels so much more rewarding. Thirdly, receiving my American FFA degree, only about 10% of members actually get this degree.
FFA isn’t all about awards, friendships are just as important and rewarding. I was lucky to experience FFA with my best friends from high school. I was also lucky enough to add to my friends with others from throughout the state. Just seeing another person in a blue corduroy jacket makes you feel like you know them.
The conferences that are offered through FFA are awesome. I attended many throughout my membership. One of my favorite was the Farm Bureau Youth Conference. Conferences were a great way to learn more about agriculture and to meet more people.
I encourage all students to join FFA. Even if you aren’t from a farm, FFA has many opportunities for everyone. There are many learning opportunities as well as fun opportunities for everyone.
